About the XRP Ledger and Ripple
BACKGROUND
XRP was launched in February 2013 by Ripple Labs (then known as OpenCoin). Unlike Bitcoin, XRP was not mined — all 100 billion tokens were created at launch, with 80 billion allocated to Ripple and 20 billion distributed to the founders. The XRP Ledger uses a unique Federated Consensus mechanism, allowing transactions to settle in 3–5 seconds with fees of less than $0.001.
Ripple's primary use case is cross-border payments. Through its On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) product, financial institutions use XRP as a bridge currency to facilitate real-time international transfers, reducing both cost and settlement time compared to traditional SWIFT-based correspondent banking.
